Endotoxins are derived from the cell walls of Gram-negative bacteria (GNB), which are found nearly everywhere in nature. These toxins reside within the outer membrane of the GNB cell wall. The bacteria do not need to be alive to contribute endotoxins — both viable and non-viable Gram-negative bacteria release them.
The most common routes of exposure are inhalation and intestinal tract absorption through contaminated food or water. Health effects vary by individual, dosage, and route of exposure. Elevated airborne concentrations are common in sewage treatment plants, swine operations, cotton textile mills, poultry houses, and water-damaged or flood-contaminated buildings.
